This book – part memoir, part political statement – examines the influence of the author’s maternal and paternal ancestry. As the author writes, “One factor which is both local and universal is that there is often a cultural bias toward a patriarchal or matriarchal parental identification when every human being is a product of joint creation by Mother and Father. On a personal level, my life at all levels of my experience has been enriched by the dualism of Father and Mother in me. Another factor is that in this world of inexorable coming together and yet remaining locally rooted, we operate at multiple interconnected levels, where there is a need for mutual understanding. This cross cultural connection has the synergetic potential for an enriching give and take. In my move from a relatively isolated African culture, through levels of education at home and abroad, and in the diplomatic service of my country, Sudan, that became two countries, Sudan and South Sudan, to international service in the United Nations, I have tried to approach my role as that of a cultural bridge builder. This book is therefore targeted to both local and global readership."
